Don’t Wedge Your Fire Doors Open. Fire doors are installed in order to protect commercial properties from the spread of fire and smoke in the event of a blaze. Stemming the spread of fire by compartmentalising rooms and corridors from one another increases the chances that the fire will be contained in a single area, making it more manageable to tackle and decreasing the overall damage incurred.
There is one potential downside of fire doors though – if they’re not closed they’re not going to do their job. The problem is that fire doors are often very heavy, cumbersome and the only access point to a room or corridor. This becomes a problem when you have (amongst an infinite number of reasons) a large number of people moving around the building, or the fire door precedes a delivery point or an entry into a dining room from a kitchen – people have to tackle the door repeatedly, find it difficult and try to jam it open with something heavy.
Firstly, it creates a tripping risk if it’s a large object wedging the door open and secondly, it’s stopping the fire door from working properly, not to mention the fact that it’s also illegal and a direct contravention to UK fire safety regulations. Dorgard is a simple and effective solution, allowing you to legally keep fire doors open without obstructing, wedging or jamming them open.
The safety product requires no wiring, is simple to install (takes just 5 minutes and 4 screws) and runs off a battery supply inside the unit. Dorgard is an automatic door closer and sits at the bottom of the fire door listening out for a continuous fire alarm of 65dBA or higher. When heard, the lock is released and the fire door closes.
It’s a simple concept, but an effective one, and is versatile enough for use in a number of different environments, requirements and industries.
