H & S consultants registered to protect clients from incompetence?
Maybe this is a proposal that should be extended to the FM world. We have all witnessed at some stage in our careers ‘consultants’ running million-pound FM tender projects, yet unable to put together a sensible cost submission spreadsheet. Reflections on the H&S Proposal: Balancing Professional Image with Practical Realities Whilst my initial reaction to the original H&S proposal was moderately positive, a feeling deep down reminded me that good professional consultants build their image on solid referrals from existing clients and, as such, would probably see a new registration scheme as an unwanted additional cost in both time (administrative […]
Choosing the right fire extinguisher
Fire extinguishers come in many different types depending on the application for which they are designed. Both businesses and private residences should maintain properly serviced fire extinguishers to handle small outbreaks before they develop into major fires. Most home and many business extinguishers are not meant to battle large flames that reach the ceiling. In these cases, getting out of the room safely is the most critical concern. Stemming the spread of fire by compartmentalising rooms and corridors from one another increases the chances that the fire will be contained in a single area, making it more manageable to tackle and decreasing the overall damage incurred. There is one potential downside of fire doors though – if they’re not closed they’re not going to do their job. The problem is that fire doors are often very heavy, cumbersome and […]
Top 10 Health and Safety Tips For Scaffolders
Graham Greaves, Director of health & Safety Services at Ellis Whittam outlines how the British Chambers of Commerce report “Health and Safety – A Risky Business” released today suggests that health and safety legislation has gone too far, is increasingly burdensome to business and applied ‘indiscriminately and unintelligently’ to low risk businesses. The report asks for simplification and consolidation of regulations, to prevent health and safety becoming a barrier to growth and a distraction to creating employment. Efforts to simplify and balance how we approach health and safety for CA businesses can only be welcomed. It is unreasonable, in any […]
